North Cape to Gibraltar by bike, summer '98

Over and Out

On Wednesday the 21st of October, four months after we started on the North Cape and after having cycled 7200 km we finally arrived at Gibraltar. This last day was not the most interesting part of our journey. Again, similar to Bilbao, we had to pass a lot of refineries and oil tanks. And then a real border control between Spain and the British Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is a 400 meter high rock, steeply rising out of the sea. Luckily there was no need to go the top for reaching the south point of this peninsula. The point, called the "Pointe de Europa" is marked by a large red-white lighthouse. Furthermore two snack-bars and that's all. Nothing of the touristic circus that was made of the North Cape. Completely unimpressive and hardly any visitors. Very well.

The bottle of Spanish champagne was opened quickly and our celebration could start. We finally were real proud of ourselves. No feelings of regret that it was over. Just satisfaction. Whatever the future will bring, nobody will take this accomplishment away from us.

This celebration was continued by staying for one night in the most luxurious hotel of Gibraltar: "The Rock". With a view over the bay and a nice G & T on our balcony we saw the Spanish sun going down sizzling in the Mediterranean Sea. After four months "Fra Kapp A Cabo" is over ...
