North Cape to Gibraltar by bike, summer '98

Andalusia

After having endured the Portuguese roads for roughly 600 km, we crossed the border-river Rio Guadiana to return to Spain. We were anxious to see if the southern parts of Spain would be as nice as the northern regions, that we had liked so much. Would it be much different and in what sense?

Well, no disappointment, we enjoyed this part of Spain just as much. In the time-frame of little more than a week, we again traveled through many different landscapes. As we often say while cycling: "everyday is different" and it really is. In the beginning a continuing of the olive trees, similar to Portugal. But in Spain everything is done on a larger scale. Much bigger areas of the same type of vegetation, which results in very impressive landscapes. Again many cork-oaks along the road, that are looking exactly what they are: stripped, or better said, ripped off.

Approaching Sevilla, the landscape became more agriculturally cultivated, but because the harvest season was over for a long time, the result were huge beautiful rolling fields, all in various colors of brown. Very bare, very beautiful. We, at least, like this type of landscape very much.

Sevilla is a very nice historic city. Only too many tourists. They come here by busloads. And the climate is so pleasant that this must be the case in every season of the year. Never mind, we wandered off and explored more normal parts of historic Sevilla. Lots of small streets only one to two meters wide. You can shake hands from one balcony to the other.

After this restday, we left Sevilla on a Sunday morning in the mist. We even needed the lights on our bikes. Luckily they still worked. Arriving in or leaving a major town is always a headache. It's nearly unavoidable to take some motor-ways with cars driving past you at high speed. And that then in the mist. Luckily it was Sunday morning. Anyway, after two hours that part was done and we were back on normal provincial roads. And again, the most beautiful fields on both left and right side. In this month everything brownish, but I'm sure that during other times of the year, it will be very different colored and just as beautiful. We will come back to Andalusia.
