FRA KAPP A CABO North Cape to Gibraltar by bike, summer '98 |
Pocinho Railway StationOn our way from Vila Flor to Vila Nova de Foz Côa, we were looking for a bench to sit on for our breakfast / lunch rest. We were in the village of Pocinho and we couldn't find a suitable spot. Until we passed the small local railway station and looked if we could find a public bench over there. Well the only ones we saw were on the platform itself. But we asked and there was no problem, so we drove our bikes on the platform and occupied one of those old wooden benches.
The whole railway station could be put in a museum. From the 1st class waiting room to the weighing scale with large copper weights for measuring the packages to be sent. On a side-track even a completely rusted steam engine was parked. Probably waiting until it would fall apart in pieces. The whole view was completed with a beautiful bridge from the previous century over the river Douro. One of those huge stone and iron constructions.
The train that came in while we were eating was not a real museum piece, but on the other hand it wasn't one of those modern streamlined designs. It fitted well in this historic environment. All in all enough reason to make some more pictures. Portugal is modernizing quickly, so old monuments like this can quickly be gone.
